Many things can go wrong with appliances, and air conditioners are no exception to this rule. Ignoring malfunctioning air conditioners can lead to high energy bills, poor performance, eventual breakdowns, and, in some cases, even damage to the home. Following are common problems you may encounter that diminish air conditioner performance.
#1. Refrigerant problems. Without the right amount of refrigerant, your air conditioner won’t be able to cool the air properly. Leaks are more common with aging air conditioners. However, new air conditioners can lack the precise recommended level of refrigerant sometimes, too. Usually this is because an insufficient amount was added in the factory. HVAC professionals can add refrigerant (or remove some if necessary) and make any repairs that may be required. Laws regulate the proper handling of refrigerant, so this is something that must be left to licensed professionals.
#2. Electrical problems. Like any electronic appliance, an air conditioner’s electrical components will wear out with time and use. Wires can fray, corrosion and breakage can disrupt connections, and the unit will cease proper functioning.
#3. Neglect. Due to an air conditioner’s design, dust and debris can build up on the filter and other components such as the coils. This will interfere with the air conditioner’s ability to function. Keep the unit clean and have regular service checks to maintain the best function.
#4. Bad drainage. The A/C’s condensate drain may clog. This can lead to water damage in the home, as well as excessive humidity, which creates a welcoming environment for mold and mildew.
#5. Thermostat sensor issues. Just as the brain tells the body what to do, an air conditioner’s thermostat sensor instructs the air conditioner what to do. If the thermostat sensor is damaged or has been pushed out of its correct position, it won’t be conveying data needed for the unit to function as it’s supposed to. This is mainly an issue with room A/Cs.
