Is your air conditioner older than two or three years? If it is, chances are it uses R-22 refrigerant, also known as Freon. R-22 is being phased out due to its harmful effects on the ozone layer, and as its supply diminishes in the coming years, its price will continue to rise. Experts predict that this summer, R-22 refrigerant prices will be three times higher than they were a year ago.
The situation won’t improve leading up to 2020 when the production and import of R-22 will be completely halted. This urgency adds pressure to the decision of whether to repair or replace older air conditioners and heat pumps. If your cooling equipment was manufactured before 2010, it likely uses R-22. Newer equipment utilizes R-410A, a more environmentally friendly refrigerant formula.
Well-maintained and properly functioning A/Cs and heat pumps using R-22 refrigerant may not require replacement despite the increasing cost. However, if your cooling equipment is over 10 years old or experiencing frequent breakdowns and maintenance issues, it is advisable to consider the benefits of upgrading to a high-efficiency system that operates on the replacement refrigerant.
As time goes on, recharging the refrigerant in your old cooling equipment will become prohibitively expensive. Investing in a new, high-efficiency air conditioner or heat pump will lead to substantial energy bill savings, usually enough to recoup the cost before the equipment reaches half of its expected lifespan. If you’ve been contemplating a new air conditioner, now is an excellent time to start exploring your options. Look for the federal Energy Star label, as Energy Star-endorsed equipment guarantees significant energy savings.
